Unequal Crossing - Over : A Common Basis of Single a - Globin Genes in Asians and American Blacks With Hemoglobin - H Disease

چکیده
The a-globin genes of five black Americans. two Chinese, and five Filipinos with HbH disease (an a-thalassemia state in which there is a single functional a gene) were analyzed by restriction endonuclease techniques. All subjects were found to have one chromosome 1 6. lacking both a genes. and another containing a single a gene ( I a). Restriction endonuclease patterns of the DNA obtained from all 1 2 subjects were identical and compatible with unequal crossing-over as the mechanism of origin of the single a gene in these individuals.

Unequal crossing-over: a common basis of single alpha-globin genes in Asians and American blacks with hemoglobin-H disease.
The alpha-globin genes of five black Americans, two Chinese, and five Filipinos with HbH disease (an alpha-thalassemia state in which there is a single functional alpha gene) were analyzed by restriction endonuclease techniques. All subjects were found to have one chromosome 16, lacking both alpha genes, and another containing a single alpha gene (--/-alpha). Restriction endonuclease patterns o...
متن کاملA molecular basis for hemoglobin-H disease in American blacks.
We have applied gene counting and restriction endonuclease mapping techniques to the study of two American black families in which there were one or more cases of HbH disease. We found deletions of three of the four normal alpha-globin genes in individuals with HbH disease. In two of these individuals, the chromosome containing the single alpha gene could have originated by crossing over betwee...

Background and Aim:-thalassemia is the most common inherited disorder of hemoglobin (Hb) synthesis in the world. Alpha thalassemia most frequently results from the loss of one (- ) or both (- -) of the duplicated genes () on chromosome 16. Carriers of deletional forms of -thalassemia (-/- /-, or --/) are clinically normal but have a mild hypochromic, microcytic anemia. C...
متن کاملChronic Kidney Disease, Anxiety and Depression among American Blacks; Does Ethnicity Matter?
Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is known to be associated with deterioration of mental health. However, it is clear that this link is over and beyond the effects of socio-economic factors and other medical conditions. This study had two aims: 1) to compare the association between CKD and general anxiety disorder (GAD) among the two major ethnic groups of American Bla...
متن کاملThe deletion in both common types of hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin is approximately 105 kilobases.
The most common forms of hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin (HPFH) involve large deletions that remove the adult delta and beta genes but leave the paired fetal genes (G gamma and A gamma) intact. The size of these deletions has previously eluded exact definition. Using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and the enzyme SfiI, which cuts only rarely in genomic DNA, we have constructed a lar...
